'Anyone Can Do It!' - We explore the myth around digital marketing...

There’s no doubt that digital platforms and social media have democratised the Internet, and everyone is free to post, edit and create online. This has led some to believe that ‘anyone can do digital marketing’, because they see it as an extension of their personal activities and posts on Facebook and Instagram. In this article, Digital Marketing with Dean looks at the fact and fiction behind this myth, using examples from our own clients to examine the benefits of professional vs amateur.

The first challenge facing would-be digital marketers is the generation of high quality content. Social media needs regular input, and it is challenging to develop top-notch posts with the frequency needed to grow reach and interactions.

Don’t be fooled by the response of what a low-quality one-liner post gets on a personal feed – potential customers for businesses will be discerning and cautious. They want to see will they be getting value for money if they were to invest in your products or services. Most visitors to your Facebook page will judge the quality of your content with the quality of your business – so you need to be hitting the right notes. This is vital.

Today’s social media world is inherently visual, with users scrolling through endless images waiting for something to catch their eye. If your images don’t rise above the normal level of most online content, they’re effectively invisible. Making sure images are high quality, interesting to view, targeted to the right audience and – crucially – unique to your business will make sure that your posts go from passable to professional.

So what does all of this look like in real life? Here is an example from one of Dean’s clients, a hospitality business trying to develop new audiences and advertise both its restaurant and its events programme through their own efforts:

As you can see, before Dean got involved there was content going out. It was regular, which was good, and had all the necessary information for prospective customers. These are both important steps. The problem with this content, though, is that it doesn’t stand out from the melee of social media output – it lacked the quality content and unique images that could create a true feeling of the business’s professionalism and quality. It did look like ‘anyone could do it’!

Compare these images with Dean’s work:

The difference is immediately obvious: quality images of the restaurant’s food, taken with professional lighting, consistency of style and a unique feel that makes them stand out from the crowd. The events posters, too, make use of these high-quality images, and are designed to give a sense of the venue and its vibe.

A quick comparison of views and interactions will show how much more effective Dean’s work has been, and the resulting growth for the business demonstrates the direct link between content quality and reach. The first Facebook statistics shown are when the hotel were managing their own social media:

The second statistics are from when Dean was managing the hotels social media:

Since Dean has been managing the social media of the hotel sales have risen. On average the hotel were taking £1600 per month in food sales before Dean came, it is now currently:
